Character~
Light is a complex and multifaceted individual. Possessing a brilliant intellect and a strong sense of morality, Light starts as an exemplary student. Raised in the Yagami family, known for its police legacy, he grows up surrounded by the ideals of justice and order. His father, Soichiro Yagami, a respected police officer, deeply influences his values.
A model student, Light excels not only academically but also in extracurricular activities. He’s diligent, disciplined, and admired by both peers and teachers. His image as an upstanding young man contrasts starkly with his hidden ambitions.
Growing up with a deep-seated sense of right and wrong, Light’s transformation into a vigilante begins when he discovers the Death Note.
He employs the Death Note to carry out his desire of erasing evil individuals. Light’s primary objective is crafting a just world, eliminating injustice and favoring honest and kind individuals. This aspiration leads him to adopt the title “God of the new world.”
With the Death Note, Light’s demeanor turns cold and merciless. As a utilitarian, he’s willing to do anything for his aims. Despite risking his family, he maintains genuine care and affection for them, displaying a complex mix of emotions.
In various adaptations, Light’s portrayal varies slightly. Nevertheless, he remains an idealist committed to defending his version of justice, often resorting to extreme actions to uphold it.
Quick Plot Summary~
In 2003 (2006 in the anime), Light Yagami finds a mysterious notebook named “Death Note” on the school playground. He read the instructions which states that when someone’s name is written in it, they die. Light doubts it but experiments and confirms its power. He decides to use it to make the world better. He meets Ryuk, the Shinigami who owns it, and explains his goal of eliminating evil and becoming a god-like ruler.
Driven by his belief in justice, Light assumes the alias “Kira” and initiates a campaign against criminals, marking his evolution into an antihero. As his actions progress, his ideals blur due to power’s allure.
Light’s intelligence and strategy empower him to manipulate situations and people effortlessly. This manipulation pits him against “L,” the master detective, spawning a gripping intellectual rivalry. Their mind games showcase Light’s ability to mask his identity while projecting innocence. With his Master Planning he was able to eliminate L.
With L’s criminal database, Light’s judgments spread widely, causing a global dark age where everyone lives under Kira’s law.
His dual life strains relationships. Interactions with his father embody familial tension. His connection with Misa Amane is complex, Light exploited her infatuation for his own goals.
With time, Light’s god complex intensifies, leading to elaborate schemes against rivals. His descent culminates in a rivalry with L’s successors Near and Mello.
Light’s character climax reveals deep manipulation and moral erosion. After L’s demise, Near and Mello take up the challenge of capturing Kira. The once-confident Light faces mounting pressure and dwindling options. In a climactic showdown, Light’s intricate plans begin to crumble. His fall exposes consequences and limits of unchecked power.
In sum, Light Yagami’s journey underscores ideals, power, and psyche’s interplay. His story cautions against moral boundaries and the sway of unchecked authority.
Relations~
L Lawliet
In Death Note, Light and L share an intense rivalry of wits. When L challenges Kira, the story sparks with their conflict. L’s detective smarts match Light’s cleverness as Kira. They engage in psychological duels where Light deceives, and L scrutinizes. Their clashes create gripping suspense throughout.
A standout moment is the potato chip scene. Light cleverly keeps killing while under watch, using a hidden Death Note. This highlights their smart strategies.
Other moment is when L handcuffs himself to Light, hoping Misa will reveal case details.
Later,L figures out Death Note’s workings, Kira’s method, and discovers Shinigami Rem. Light and Misa regain Kira memories. L learns a rule: no writing for 13 days means death. Despite a solid alibi for Light, L’s suspicion remains. The Task Force relaxes, and L had to releases Misa and the handcuffs.
After Misa’s release, Kira’s killings resume. L argues with the Task Force and intends to use the notebook to test the 13-day rule’s validity. Just then Watari dies and all Kira’s case has been deleted .
L’s death is orchestrated by Rem, another Shinigami who possesses a Death Note. Rem writes L’s name in her Death Note to save Misa Amane the second Kira.
When L suffers a heart attack, Light catches him and holds his arms, displaying a smug smirk that confirms his identity as Kira all along.
L’s death is sad and leaves a mark. His absence affects the story, but his influence remains. His death shifts the story, making room for new characters in the battle against Kira.
Light and L’s connection is a key focus, filled with tension and strategy. Light’s attempts to outsmart L and L’s determination for truth resonate. Their interactions shape Death Note’s core, impacting themes of morality and power.
Ryuk~
In Death Note, Light’s connection with Ryuk is important. Ryuk, the Shinigami who brings the Death Note, sets the story in motion.
At first, Light is curious and careful around Ryuk. He’s captivated by the Death Note’s power and how it matches his goals. Ryuk finds the chaos caused by the Death Note amusing, aligning with Light’s ambitions.
In the story, Ryuk mostly watches without interfering in Light’s actions. He stays neutral, neither aiding nor stopping Light. Ryuk’s mysterious nature makes their connection even more complex.
In the beginning Ryuk told Light that he will take his life when the time comes.
In the manga’s end, during a showdown, Light is shot by Matsuda. He pleads with Ryuk to write others’ names, but Ryuk writes Light’s name instead. Ryuk had hoped Light would find a solution, but seeing his desperation, Ryuk ends it. Ryuk goes back to the Shinigami Realm after killing Light.
In the anime, Light flees the warehouse as Mikami commits suicide, causing a distraction. Ryuk observes from above. Light’s injuries prevent him from escaping far. Ryuk, finding waiting for Light’s prison sentence uninteresting, writes Light’s name in the Death Note.
Misa Amane~
Light and Misa’s connection is little complex. Misa, the second Kira, admires Light for his Kira actions. She falls for him, thinking he’s Kira, but Light’s feelings are more practical.
Misa’s attraction grows due to her belief in Kira’s justice. Light sees Misa’s worth as an ally because of her Death Note and loyalty. He exploits her emotions to advance his goals, using her Death Note to remove perceived threats. He leverages her love to gather intel and appear innocent during the investigation.
They manipulate each other in their relationship. Light treats Misa with detachment, while her loyalty leads her to sacrifice. Light doesn’t truly share her feelings, using her for his goals.
In the anime’s conclusion, right after Light’s death, Misa is seen alone on a tall building’s ledge. Though not shown, it’s believed she might have taken her own life due to Light’s death. Tsugumi Ohba, the creator, suggests this possibility in “Death Note 13: How to Read.”
Light and Misa’s relationship is one of calculated manipulation and strategic partnership.
Near and Mello~
Near and Mello are successors to L’s legacy, continuing his pursuit of Kira after his death. Their relation with Light is one of rivalry and conflict.
Light sees Near and Mello as formidable adversaries who challenge his reign as Kira. Near, known for his analytical prowess, and Mello, characterized by his more impulsive and aggressive approach, form a dynamic duo in their investigation.
Light thinks he can outsmart Near like he did with L, but Near’s careful work gets him closer to uncovering Light’s real identity.
Mello is motivated by a personal grudge against Kira, making him unpredictable. His risky methods and strong resolve set him apart in the fight against Light.
Near eventually reveals Light’s real identity as Kira in Death Note. He collects evidence through thorough investigation and confronts Light, exposing him to the Task Force.
Light’s relationship with Near and Mello is one of intense rivalry and strategic maneuvering.
Yagami Family~
Light’s family has a history in law enforcement, with his father Soichiro being a respected police officer. This background shapes Light’s sense of justice. Initially, Light has a close and affectionate bond with his family, unaware that he’s secretly Kira.
In a pivotal moment, Sayu, Light’s sister, gets kidnapped by Mello to get the Death Note. This forces Light to choose between his mission and his love for her. Despite his Kira role, Light cares deeply for his family, prompting him to collaborate with the task force to save Sayu using a fake Death Note.
After his father Soichiro Yagami’s death, Light grieves profoundly. Despite their differing views on Kira, Soichiro’s passing deeply affects Light, reflecting their complex relationship.
Even after being corrupted by the Death Note, Light continues to show a willingness to protect his family.
Task Force~
Light’s relationship with the task force is a blend of manipulation, collaboration, and tension.
At the start, Light joins the task force willingly, acting helpful and keen to aid the investigation. He pretends to be a committed ally against Kira, concealing his true identity as Kira himself.
While Light skillfully manipulates, a few in the task force still have faith in him, while others become doubtful. Matsuda, especially, admires Light and thinks he’s innocent.
In the end of Death Note, Light’s true identity as Kira is exposed to the task force. Near’s careful investigation reveals Light’s manipulation. As reality sinks in, emotions rise. Matsuda, who admired Light, is hurt and furious. Overwhelmed by frustration, he shoots Light in a moment of intense feeling.
Light’s dynamic with the task force involves his manipulation, their dependence on his smarts, and the tension from chasing Kira. These interactions create suspense and delve into moral themes.
Teru Mikami~
Mikami is a strong Kira supporter, driven by justice. Light sees his dedication and smarts, using him to advance his own goals.
Mikami seizes Gelus’s Death Note when Light is suspected of being Kira again, needing an independent Kira. He trades for Shinigami Eyes with Ryuk. Mikami’s alignment with Kira’s views led Light to pick him for judgments while under surveillance.
Though Light and Mikami share similar ideals, a difference arises as Mikami kills people with criminal records, even if they haven’t committed new crimes. Light disagrees with this approach.
In the anime’s final episode, Mikami’s deep despair at witnessing his god’s downfall drives him to commit suicide by stabbing himself with a pen. This diversion distracts the Task Force and SPK, allowing Light to escape the warehouse. The ending credits show Mikami’s lifeless body on the warehouse floor.
In the manga, Mikami turns away from Light as his god when Light tries to order him to eliminate the task force and the SPK, even though the notebook is already taken. Mikami is later imprisoned but dies under mysterious circumstances in prison after ten days. Matsuda speculates that Near might have controlled Mikami with the Death Note to incriminate Light.
Fate~
Manga-
Light’s plans unravel when he’s left powerless. He desperately urges Mikami to use the fake notebook to kill, revealing he’s not “God.” Distraught, he seeks help from Misa and Takada, learning both are unavailable. In his desperation, he implores Ryuk to kill, but Ryuk declines, staying neutral. Remembering his promise, Ryuk writes “Light Yagami” in the Death Note. Light pleads for reversal, panicked, repeating “I don’t want to die” before succumbing to the Death Note’s effects.
Anime~
Mikami kills himself with a pen, distracting the investigators. Light, though weakened, escapes the warehouse. Near tells his team not to chase, as Light’s wounds should slow him. Aizawa disobeys and follows Light. Meanwhile, Ryuk writes Light’s name in another hiding place. As Light dies, he sees an illusion of L, mirroring a past encounter.

Personal Opinion~
Personally i am not able to fully hate or fully love Light Yagami. I mean i am just neutral towards him.
I believe that if he hadn’t found the Death Note, he would have become a great police officer and a good person.
Killing people believing that he could erase crime from the world thinking that its the right way makes me hate him.
But I still believe that deep down he was still a good Person who went on a wrong track and lost his real self.
His intelligence was one of his greatest traits . Throughout the series he showed his cleverness and creativity time to time which i loved. But, still i couldn’t get over the fact he killed so many People.
Still he was a very enjoyable, interesting a unique character.
My rating for him will be a 8 out if 10.
