Background ~
Life~
Vermouth possesses a secretive history, linked closely to the Black Organization. She leads dual lives one as the renowned actress Sharon Vineyard (now deceased) and her supposed daughter Chris Vinyard.
During her time as Sharon, she formed a strong bond with Yukiko Kudo while mastering disguise under Touchi Kuroba’s guidance. Sharon gained worldwide Fame even winning an Oscar.
Twenty years ago, Vermouth killed Jodie Starling’s father, an FBI agent who collected some information about her. This event motivated Jodie to join the FBI and become one of Vermouth’s enemy.
While portraying Sharon, Vermouth introduced Chris as her daughter. She pretended that both Mother and Daughter did’t get along well . When Sharon was still alive Chris was kept away from public eye only starring in some movies and giving interviews.
But After Vermouth staged Sharon death Chris was able to come out publicly. However, she still works as a member of Black Organization.
Member of Black Organization~
Vermouth holds a unique position within the Black Organization, favored by the boss for some reasons, giving her greater freedom than other members.
She maintains a secretive connection with the boss, which she doesn’t want anyone to know. Nevertheless, Bourbon knows about it and exploits it to blakmail Vermouth.
Vermouth doesn’t like the research pursued by Shiho Miyano and her parents, calling it “foolish.”
Occasionally, she acts according to her own agenda even if it contrats with organizations interest.
Furthermore, Vermouth has some personal interest in Conan, often referring to him as the “silver bullet.” Additionally, she possesses knowledge that both Shinichi and Shiho were reverted to children due to “APTX4869”. However, she keeps it a secret from the organization due to unspecified reasons.
Perosnality ~
Vermouth keeps things secret and manipulates even within the organization. She does things her own way and is bold and confident about her abilities. She can also manipulate situations to work in her favor.
However, her personality contradicts itself occasionally. She can be cruel and ruthlessness, seen when she blackmail a man into murder by threatening his family. Additionally, she killed Jodie’s father and, with a smile, told Jodie that she’d soon join him soon (meaning in Heaven) and told her to stay in the house and set the house on fire.
On the other hand, she risked herself multiple times in order to protect Conan, Ran, and Kogoro. This inconsistency might came from Shinichi and Ran saving her during the Golden Apple case. When she was disguised as Dr. Araide, she displayed friendliness towards others. Vermouth initially seemed atheist, as she didn’t believed in God or Angels. However, after Ran unkowingly rescued her, her faith seemed partially restored.
In certain instances, it can be inferred that Vermouth doesn’t like to harm Children. For example, when Jodie was a child, she caught Vermouth in her father’s room, although she remained unaware that Vermouth killed her father. Instead of directly causing harm to Jodie, Vermouth instructed her to stay inside the house, which she later set on fire.
Another instance is when she questioned a young witness named Toji Funemoto regarding Kir’s accident. Despite her ruthless nature, Vermouth opted not to take his life.
She also enjoys teasing others, as seen when she dressed as a male waiter, serving Gin and Vodka martinis. She also taunted Chinati with a kiss while wishing her good luck.
Plot ~
Vermouth’s secretive past is tied to the Black Organization. She lives two lives: as actress Sharon Vineyard and “daughter” Chris Vineyard. Undercover, she excelled in disguise and formed a bond with Yukiko Kudo. She killed Jodie Starling’s FBI agent father 20 years ago. Chris, her “daughter,” remained mostly hidden during Sharon’s lifetime only appearing in some movies and interviews.
First appearance~
Vermouth first appearnce in the series was in episode “Reunion with the Black Organisation” where she attended a party disguised as Chris Vineyard. She aided Pisco who was another Organisation member without anyone noticing that.
After the case, Gin and Vodka pick up Chris Vineyard, revealing her as Vermouth. She came from America to aid Pisco. Instead of returning, she decides to stay in Japan for a while due to unsettling thoughts—likely recognizing Conan and Haibara as Shinichi and Shiho.
Golden Apple Case~
A year before the current timeline, Yukiko and Shinichi visit New York City to watch “Golden Apple” on Broadway with tickets from Sharon Vineyard (Vermouth’s persona). Sharon gives Ran a handkerchief after an accident and she leaves them afterwards.
Vermouth then disguises as a silver-haired serial killer to target Shuichi Akai but is shot by him. She escapes, hides in a building, and meets Ran and Shinichi. Ran saves her from falling. Vermouth wonders why they helped her, then Shinichi answered:
Is a reason necessary? I don’t know why you would kill someone, but as for helping someone, a logical mind isn’t needed, right?
Afterwards Shinichi and Ran left. Vermouth cleans the scene, and later, a real suicide occurs. Shinichi believes Vermouth used it to hide her actions. Next day, Sharon talks to Yukiko, hinting at the event’s connection to Ran. From then on, Vermouth calls Ran “angel” and Shinichi/Conan “cool guy.”
Disguised as Dr. Araide~
Initially, Vermouth planned to eliminate Araide, aiming to bring Conan and Haibara nearer. However, the FBI staged Araide’s death without her knowledge. Vermouth the took Araide’s identity.
This allowed the FBI to investigate Vermouth. The exact timing when she disguised as Araide is unclear. Nevertheless, it likely occurred before the “Desperate Revival” events.
Pictures hidden behind Jodie’s mirror showed Dr. Araide’s photo from a school play, hinting that they investigated Araide.Copies of Vermouth’s photos were there too, meaning the FBI searched Araide’s office while Vermouth was disguised.
Vermouth pretended to be Araide for a long time until the episode “Head to Head Match with the Black Organization” That’s when Jodie uncovered her disguise.
As Araide, Vermouth was friendly to his friends and patients, making Araide wonder if she’s genuinely evil or not.
Hunting Shiho Miyano ~
Vermouth’s key mission was to hunt down Shiho Miyano, who betrayed the Black Organization. She aimed to kill her and came to Japan from America for this purpose. While she knew about APTX4869’s effects, she knew that it transformed Shinichi and Shiho into children, known as Conan Edogawa and Ai Haibara, she hid this from the Organization.
Disguised as Araide, Vermouth tried to draw them closer. In the “Head to Head Match with the Black Organization” episode she planned to kill Shiho but she was saved by Ran. Due to Shuichi and Conan she was forced to retreat. While she attempted to eliminate Shiho later, she also avoided harming Conan and Ran, possibly because they saved her unknowingly in the “Golden Apple Case.”
In the “Bell Train Arc,” Bourbon informed Vermouth of Shiho’s presence on Bell Tree Express. Vermouth informed Gin and teamed up with Bourbon. While Bourbon aimed to capture Shiho, Vermouth planned to kill her, altering the plan secretly.
However, Conan, Shuichi, and Yukiko were already aware of Vermouth’s plan. They aimed to spoil it with Kaito Kid’s help. Yukiko challenged Vermouth who was disguised as Scar Akai to a battle of wits, where Vermouth had to give up on Shiho if Conan outsmarted her on the train.
In the end, they outsmarted Vermouth. She mentally praised Yukiko’s casting choice. While all organization members believed Shiho was deceased, Vermouth knew otherwise.
As agreed with Yukiko, Vermouth gave up on Shiho. This is evident in the episode “The Key to Solving the Mystery,” where she lies to Bourbon and keeps her promise to Yukiko by assuring him they “sent Sherry to her grave.”
Vs FBI ~
Vermouth appears in “Black Organization versus FBI,” meeting Gin and Rena to discuss an assassination plan. Their initial plan fails due to Jodie and Conan. A second plan, targeting Kogoro, is canceled when Kir’s tracker is found.
Gin finds the tracker, leading to a change in targets. Conan thwarts the snipers, and Gin orders Chianti and Korn to eliminate him and Kogoro. Vermouth objects, stating that Kogora waa heavily involved with the Police. Gin questions if she’s linked to Kogoro, and she responded by saying
my, my, if there was, what would you do?
Shuichi Akai intervenes, stopping the assassination. The Black Organization retreats. Vermouth speculates it was an FBI trap with Kogoro as bait.
In “Menu for Dinner,” as part of the organization’s plan to locate their missing agent Kir, Vermouth questions a kid present at Kir’s capture. She learns Kir was injured and might be in a hospital.
In “Red versus Black,” the boss orders Vermouth to follow Akai’s Chevrolet as the FBI moves Kir. Later, she observes Jodie Starling and James Black’s reactions to Akai’s reported death. Vermouth believes Conan, the “silver bullet,” is enough.
In “Thirteen Red Shirts,” Bourbon approached Vermouth to seek her help in disguising as Akai as he wanted to confirm Akai’s death. The Boss approved their plan, but they failed to tell Gin and the others.
The plan goes wrong when Gin learns of “Akai” and tries to kill him. Vermouth arrives as “Scar Akai” exits the store and stops Gin. She affirms the boss’s approval for the plan. Vermouth adds the plan was an extra safety measure due to the boss’s cautious nature.
In “Teacher Assault Case,” Bourbon and Vermouth discuss Shibuya Natsuko, meant to meet Bourbon. Vermouth questions his intentions with her. Hearing a noise, they find Natsuko pushed down stairs. They leave to avoid attention.
In the second episode’s end, Bourbon questions Camel about Kisuda Rikumichi. Disguised as Jodie, Vermouth intervenes. She learns Rikumichi shot himself, smiling as she walks away with the information.
In “Scarlet Showdown,” Vermouth tells Bourbon about Kusuda’s suicide. Bourbon hints Akai’s alive but Vermouth doubts it due to police checks.
In the next episode, Bourbon verifies Akai’s death to Vermouth. Bourbon says he would appreciate Vermouth’s help whenever he needs it, and says that he is the only one who knows her secret, regarding her and the Boss’ relationship Vermouth stops him by aiming a gun.
In “The Black Organization’s Scheme,” Vermouth decodes FBI communication to attack them. When the FBI plants a fake code, Rum detects it and counter attacks FBI members. She teams with Kir, shooting Camel at Umibotaru, causing him to fall into the sea. Ahe and the organization started searching for Camel.
At Umizarujima, they split to find Camel but are tricked into thinking he’s dead. Vermouth shows Camel’s photo to Korn, recalling Rum sent it 2 years ago.
★ Quick Summary ~
Vermouth is a complex character in the Detective Conan series. She’s a high-ranking member of the Black Organization. Known for her skills in disguise, manipulation, and intelligence, Vermouth plays a significant role in various storylines.
One of her key missions is to track down and eliminate Shiho Miyano, who betrayed the Black Organization. However, Vermouth is also unique in that she’s aware of the side effects of APTX4869, the drug that shrank both Shinichi Kudo and Shiho into children, and transformed them into Conan Edogawa and Ai Haibara. Despite this knowledge, she chooses not to reveal it to the Organization.
Throughout the series, Vermouth’s actions often appear contradictory. She can be ruthless and cruel, but she also displays moments of compassion and unexpected behavior. Her interactions with key characters like Shuichi Akai, Jodie Starling, and Conan reveal her complexity. Her relationships with them are a blend of rivalry, manipulation, and a hint of mutual respect.
Vermouth’s involvement in various cases and her interactions with both the Black Organization and other characters make her a central figure in the overarching plot. Her motives and true allegiance remain shrouded in mystery, adding depth to the ongoing narrative.
Relationship Analysis ~
Black Organisation Members –
1. GIN
Vermouth and Gin, both executive members, work well together on missions. However, Gin dislikes her secretive nature and teasing habits. Before the ghost ship showdown, they trusted each other, but Ginl lost his trust on Vermouth when she hid her plans even from the boss.
Gin is unafraid to threaten her physically. He almost struck her with an icepick when she teased him as a waiter and later aimed his gun when questioning her link to Kogoro. Despite the threats, Vermouth remains unfazed. As a high-ranking and boss’s favorite, she doesn’t fear provoking others, including the dangerous Gin. She playfully dodged his icepick, smiling, and claiming it was a joke, showcasing her enjoyment in teasing him. It is not yet revealed if they are in any Romantic Relation or not.
2.Shiho Miyano / Ai Haibara / Sherry~
Vermouth and Sherry have a connection, though not explained. Vermouth dislikes Miyanos’ research, deeming it foolish. Shiho fears Vermouth the most, except maybe Gin. Shiho was Vermouth’s target but gave up due to Conan. In the ‘Bell Tree Express arc’, Vermouth tried to kill Sherry secretly, while Bourbon wanted her alive, suggesting unusual hatred. If Shiho dated Gin, Vermouth and she were love rivals, as Vermouth was with Gin.
3. The Boss
In file 898, Bourbon hints at a deeper connection between Vermouth and the boss beyond favoritism. He’s prepared to reveal her secret to the organization if something happens to him, surprising other members. Vermouth is also called the Boss’ Favorite, giving her certain privileges like more freedom and protection from other Black organization members.
4. Tequilla, Chianti & Korn, Pisco and Calvados
Suguru Itakura suspected Vermouth and Tequila were working together, as they both wanted him to complete a program the Black Organization was interested in.
Chianti and Korn dislike Vermouth, feeling she exploited Calvados’ feelings for her, resulting in his death. Chianti expresses her hatred more openly than Korn.
Vermouth and Pisco are both executives, but Vermouth dislikes and disrespects Pisco despite working together.
Calvados loved Vermouth, but she exploited his feelings and made use of him. She asked for his help to handle Jodie and capture Haibara. When Shuichi outsmarted them, Vermouth fled, leaving Calvados to the FBI. He chose suicide over capture.
5. Rei Furaya / Bourbon ~
Vermouth and Bourbon maintain close contact and seem closer than Bourbon and Gin. Both work in reconnaissance. While their exact roles aren’t clear, Vermouth tracks Bourbon’s actions during missions and he informs her of discoveries. Vermouth helped Bourbon disguise as Akai. She aided him in approaching Kogoro, suspecting he knew Sherry. Bourbon promised Vermouth to protect Conan and Ran, and she questioned him after a chase.
Their teamwork resembles Gin and Vodka’s, but trust isn’t as strong. Bourbon knows her secret boss connection. He uses it to involve her in investigations. If he dies, he plans to reveal her secret to Organization members.
6. Rum
Not known much about the link between the Boss’ Favorite and the Boss’ Close Aide. Vermouth followed orders from the Second-In-Command. She investigated Yusaku Kudo in a case related to his TV show, which Rum sees as a threat.
7. Vodka ~
Vermouth’s relationship with Vodka appears neutral. Unlike other members, she doesn’t show negative feelings towards him. They’re occasionally paired on missions, but generally, they don’t interact much. She teases him about his lack of literary knowledge in a light-hearted manner.
Friends ~
1. Yukiko Kudo –
Vermouth, using her alias Sharon Vineyard, and Yukiko had a friendly relationship when they were learning disguise under the guidance of Toichi Kuroba. They stayed in touch even since. Sharon helped them get tickets to a play. Yukiko attended Sharon’s funeral. Yukiko later accepts Conan’s deduction that Sharon is connected to the Black Organization. Vermouth showed care for Yukiko during a confrontation in “Bell Train Arc” indicating her soft spot for Shinichi and Yukiko.
2. Toichi Kuroba ~
Sharon learned disguise from Toichi Kuroba, alongside Yukiko Kudo. Sharon didn’t know Toichi was also Kaitou Kid. Kaito Kuroba, Toichi’s son, disrupted Sharon and Bourbon’s plan to capture Sherry during the “Bell Train Arc”
Law enforcement ~
1. Jodie Starling ~
Jodie Starling hates Vermouth for killing her father. Vermouth sees Jodie as a formidable FBI opponent but doesn’t hold personal animosity. Jodie views Vermouth as entirely evil due to her smile while killing. Twenty years ago, Vermouth killed Jodie’s father, escaping detection. Jodie becomes an FBI agent to find her father’s killer.
2. Suichi Akai ~
Vermouth and Shuichi don’t hold personal grudges, despite being adversaries. Vermouth sees Shuichi as a threat to the Black Organization and attacks him strategically. Shuichi’s comment about her being a “rotten apple” seemed to strike a nerve.
3. Hidemi Hondou / Kir~
Vermouth holds suspicions about Kir’s affiliation with the CIA, but she has kept this information to herself. Kir and Vermouth have a professional relationship within the Black Organization. Vermouth and Kir worked together on missions. However, their relationship isn’t explored extensively, and the nature of their connection remains largely focused on their roles within the organization.
Others ~
1.Shinichi Kudo/ Conan Edogawa ~
Vermouth has a complex relationship with Shinichi, aka Conan. She initially nicknames him “Cool guy” after he helps save her life in New York. Later, she calls him “Silver bullet” due to his potential to destroy the Black Organization. Despite hunting each other, Vermouth tries to protect Shinichi when possible. She knocked him out once to keep him safe, destroyed dangerous wires, and covered him to prevent sickness. She even shot herself to distract him from danger. In a surprising move, she defended Conan against the Organization’s orders, showing a complex mix of intentions.
2. Ran Mouri~
After Ran saved Vermouth’s life, Vermouth called her “Angel.” Despite their tense encounters, Vermouth showed signs of care. Ran stopped Vermouth from falling, and Vermouth seemed touched. Later, when Ran shielded Haibara from danger, Vermouth didn’t harm her. Ran treasures a handkerchief Vermouth gave her, considering her as one of her precious treasures, alongside Shinichi.
3. Yusaku Kudo ~
Vermouth as Sharon and Yusaku were likely connected through Yukiko Kudo, as Yukiko was friend of Sharon (Vermouth’s disguise) and wife of Yusaku. Vermouth investigated Yusaku as per Rum’s orders, but he outsmarted her. Since Yusaku is Shinichi’s father, it’s uncertain if Vermouth truly intended to harm him as she suggested.
5. Kogoro Mouri~
Vermouth took Kogoro’s files from the police to pose as Tomoaki Araide in court, and later returned them. She aimed to shield Kogoro, who is Ran’s father, from danger and cared about Ran’s feelings.
6. Mary Sera
Vermouth posed as Tsutomu Akai (Mary’s Husband) to draw out Mary Sera in London. Her plan to infiltrate the intelligence service took an unexpected turn when she made Mary ingest APTX 4869, causing her to shrink.
7. Tomoaki Araide ~
Vermouth’s plan involved killing Araide to assume his identity, getting closer to Conan and Haibara. However, the FBI faked Araide’s death, allowing Vermouth to take his place. As Araide, Vermouth was friendly and caring, which made the real Araide question her true intentions. Their interaction is a result of Vermouth’s strategic move rather than a personal connection.
8. Suguru Itakuru ~
Sharon Vineyard (Vermouth) and Itakura previously collaborated on movies involving visual effects the two were known for their constant quarelling. Itakura follows Vermouth’s orders and works on a program desired by the Black Organization. Itakura doesn’t seem to recognize Sharon as Vermouth.

She can replicate people’s looks and sounds even after just a brief observation. She often uses latex masks and is known to be as skilled as the current Kaito Kid in her disguises. Although she might have had some knowledge of disguise before meeting Toichi Kuroba, she further honed her skills under his guidance.

This acting skill helps her maintain her cover and gather information without being suspected.
4. Non-Aging ~
Vermouth’s non-aging ability is a mysterious aspect of her character. Despite the passage of time, she appears to remain the same age as when she murdered Jodie’s parents twenty years ago. This has raised questions about whether Vermouth truly does not age or if she experienced a sudden de-aging process. Shuichi Akai’s confirmation that Vermouth was not wearing a mask during their encounter. Additionally, Vermouth’s exceptional talent for disguise makes it challenging to determine when exactly she stopped aging or deaged. The exact nature and mechanism of Vermouth’s non-aging ability remain unclear.

Bonus ~
★ Vermouth’s true age —
As a master of disguise, Vermouth has the ability to alter her appearance, making it difficult to determine her actual age. Such as her living as Chris (29 years old) and Sharon (unknown age), provide some insights into her various identities, but they do not provide a definitive answer to her true age. During a conversation on the train, Yukiko brings up the topic of Vermouth’s age and her ability to maintain a youthful appearance. Vermouth reveals that the method she uses to maintain her youthful appearance involves a painful process that only affects her face, not the rest of her body. Despite her potential age, Vermouth’s movements and behavior do not align with those of a person in their 40s or older.
★ Vermouth and APTX4869 ~
One popular theory regarding Vermouth’s non-aging is that she may have used APTX 4869, the drug known for shrinking people’s bodies, to achieve her youthful appearance. However, there are contradictions to this theory. It is unlikely that Vermouth used APTX 4869 because it is known to be lethal, and she would have faced certain death if she had taken it.
Another possibility is that Vermouth’s de-aging/non-aging is a result of a different project or drug, possibly older than APTX 4869, such as the Silver Bullet experiment conducted by Atsushi and Elena Miyano, or something even older. This could explain Vermouth’s personal animosity towards the Miyanos and why she calls their experiment foolish.
It is also speculated that Vermouth may have administered APTX 4869 orally, hiding it in her mouth and transferring it to her intended target like in Mary Sera’s Case. This could explain how she remains young while potentially affecting or killing her targets.
During her conversation with Yukiko in The Jet-Black Mystery Train, Vermouth explained that her skincare routine, which helps her maintain a youthful appearance, does not have the same effect on her entire body.
★Name Origin ~
Vineyard is a plantation of grape-bearing vines. The name “Vermouth” in the context of the character in the Detective Conan series has an origin related to the pattern of wine-based codenames for women in the Black Organization. Vermouth, being a type of flavored fortified wine, follows this pattern.
