Appearance
Vash, a tall blond man standing at about 180 centimeters in height, has striking blue-green eyes. His distinctive feature is his hair, which resembles needles and often leads to playful nicknames from his friends, like “Needlehead.” Underneath his clothing, Vash’s body is a grim mosaic of extensive scars and large sections of missing flesh, which have been replaced with metal plates and stitches.
Remarkably, his head and neck remain unscathed and in perfect condition. In the anime, Vash loses his left arm from the shoulder down during a confrontation with Knives in July City. This lost limb is subsequently replaced with a cybernetic prosthesis that includes a built-in weapon.
Clothes
Vash’s signature outfit consists of a long, crimson trenchcoat with a high collar, featuring various straps and black buttons. The coat is designed with slits on both sides from the waist down to facilitate his mobility in activities like running, jumping, and climbing. His right sleeve is seamlessly integrated into the trenchcoat, while the left sleeve is fastened with a series of black straps and buckles.
Beneath the coat, he sports form-fitting dark pants and knee-high combat boots equipped with retractable knives in the toes and circular metal plates at the knees. His snug black top is sleeveless and molds to his physique. On occasion, he accessorizes with a pair of light amber-colored sunglasses sporting zigzagging arms, although these eyepieces are frequently damaged and subsequently replaced.

Personality
Vash exhibits two distinct personalities in both the manga and the anime. Initially, he deliberately exaggerates foolish traits to appear non-threatening and conceal his identity. These outrageous actions and chronic kindness serve as a mask to hide his inner pain, as observed by Milly.
He often displays an almost obsessive love for doughnuts, engages in lecherous behavior, interacts with local children, befriends adults, and occasionally makes bizarre jokes or quips.
For instance, upon meeting Wolfwood, he introduced himself with the elaborate name “Valentinez Alkalinella Xifax Sicidabohertz Gumbigobilla Blue Stradivari Talentrent Pierre Andres Charton-Haymoss Ivanovicci Baldeus George Doitzel Kaiser III.” He frequently utters the catchphrase, “This world is made of love and peace,” accompanied by flashing the “V” or Peace sign, which perplexes friends and acquaintances and frustrates his enemies.
However, Vash’s other side is tormented and lonely, rarely revealed when he is in the company of others. Due to his long life and legendary (and infamous) reputation, he has lost numerous friends and his only family.
People he trusted have either betrayed him or been killed for simply knowing him, as implied by Luida. During the 20 years he was a hunted man, he frequently had to conceal his identity and fend off relentless bounty hunters, leading to moments of brooding and depression when alone or engaged in deep introspection.
A central point of conflict in the series revolves around the inner differences between Vash and his twin brother, Knives, and their perspectives on humanity.Despite enduring suffering and ill-treatment by humans, Vash remains hopeful and loving toward humanity, while Knives harbors a deep-seated hatred for the entire race, despite never personally suffering at their hands.
Their personalities also diverge in that Vash abhors the despair of being alone, while Knives revels in his loneliness and has no desire for any company other than Vash.Vash’s refusal to kill his opponents often leaves him at the mercy of unscrupulous enemies. As a result, his body bears a patchwork of large scars, missing flesh held together by metal mesh, and visible stitch marks.
Despite his reluctance to reveal his body, especially to women, whom he believes would be repulsed, Vash chooses not to use his power to remove or repair these scars, keeping them as a reminder of the price he pays for his unwavering mercy.
Past
Vash and Knives were found as infants by a spaceship crew on Gunsmoke, a year before the Project SEEDS fleet arrived. Initially, the crew considered killing them due to their appearance as human-like Plants, but Rem, an adoptive mother figure, intervened, begging for their lives. The twins aged rapidly in just a year, and their intellectual capabilities far exceeded normal human development.
Vash and Knives had different reactions to their upbringing. Vash developed a close bond with Rem, who gave him his distinctive spiky hairstyle, reminiscent of her old boyfriend, Alex. Knives, on the other hand, became more introspective and possibly jealous of the bond between Vash and Rem.
This period marked the beginning of a change in Knives’ demeanor. Steve, a crew member, openly disliked the twins and treated them poorly, leading to tensions within the group. Knives, however, tried to maintain a sense of order and morality among the crew members, even if it meant manipulation.
The twins’ differing values became evident when they encountered a butterfly stuck in a spiderweb. Vash wanted to save both creatures, while Knives believed in a more pragmatic approach. This led to a heated argument between them.Tragedy struck the crew when Steve was accused of assaulting Mary, leading to his freezing and eventual death. Knives appeared to take pleasure in this, further revealing his darker side.
A series of events, including the incident with Rolan and Mary’s death, drove the crew to conflict, and Rem tried to mediate. This deeply affected Vash, and he questioned why humans couldn’t get along.
Eventually, Rem sacrificed herself to save the others, including Vash and Knives, when the control ship’s course was altered. This act left a profound impact on Vash.As the twins wandered the deserts, Knives revealed his plan to cleanse the planet of humans to save the Plants. Vash, torn by moral conflicts, shot Knives in the leg and fled, leading to their separation.
After spending two years wandering Gunsmoke alone, Vash ultimately collapses from exhaustion. He is then rescued by a group of humans from the only remaining fully functioning SEEDS ship above the planet. During his time with them, he forms friendships and receives his iconic red duster-style trench coat. After a few months, he embarks on a new journey, leaving the group behind.
Eighty years later, Vash returns to the ship in search of any relatives of Rem stored in its data banks. To his surprise, he discovers the sole survivor, known as “Revenant Buskus” with Passenger No. 300-89-9023AS, who had been studying Plants and establishing a new plant theory in July City.
July Incident
Upon arriving in July City, Vash is greeted by Knives, who has already killed Buskus, the person Vash intended to meet. Knives proudly declares that he has severed Vash’s last connection to Rem, intending to end Vash’s sentimentality towards humans. In response, Vash points his gun at Knives, but Knives swiftly shoots off Vash’s left arm. Against Vash’s wishes, Knives activates Vash’s dormant Angel Arm, hoping to obliterate the town.
Unexpectedly, Vash directs the devastating blast towards Knives, reducing July City to rubble. While there were no immediate casualties from the Angel Arm’s power, the homeless citizens of July subsequently turned on each other, transforming the remnants of the town into what one survivor described as “Hell.“
Trigun Anime (1998)
The story takes a significant turn when the July incident brands Vash as an outlaw throughout Gunsmoke, earning him the titles “The Stampede” and “The Humanoid Typhoon” due to the destruction that appears to follow him wherever he goes. A colossal bounty of 60,000,000,000$$ is placed on Vash, the largest ever offered, as Knives remains missing.
Over the next twenty-three years, Vash hides from civilization to stay alive. During this time, two insurance agents, Meryl Stryfe and Milly Thompson, are assigned to locate and monitor Vash to prevent further damage. Reluctantly, Vash is accompanied by the two women on his journeys.
Another pivotal moment unfolds in April City when the residents, ravaged by poverty due to a reactor shutdown, seek to capture Vash for the bounty. The city’s mayor, desperate to catch him, enlists the help of the Nebraska Family, a sinister father and his half-machine son who have recently escaped from prison.Vash is captured in a small saloon, but the Nebraska Family has their own plans for the bounty. The bar is destroyed by Goseph’s retractable fist, but miraculously, all inside survive. Vash rescues the survivors and confronts the Nebraskas, defeating them with just six bullets.
The city’s prosperity is restored with the Nebraskas’ bounty, and repairs commence on the damaged reactor. The project is led by a young woman named Elizabeth, who harbors her own agenda: to kill Vash. She lures Vash to the sabotaged reactor, seemingly trapping him inside. As Elizabeth locks him in, she reveals her intent for revenge, driven by a tragic past. Twenty-three years ago, as a three-year-old in July City, she found solace in the arms of one man amid the city’s destruction. In a surprising turn of events, Vash manages to shut down the reactor himself and encounters Elizabeth outside. She pulls a pistol on him, still seeking revenge. Vash, however, claims to remember nothing of July’s destruction, only the city’s ruins when he awoke. Shocked, Elizabeth recognizes a compassionate side of Vash and spares him, collapsing in the realization of the truth.
While Vash and the girl continue their journey, they encounter a traveling priest named Wolfwood, who carries a large steel cross. Initially appearing as an ordinary priest, Wolfwood’s true abilities are revealed during a conflict with machines powered by lost technology. He demonstrates remarkable gunfighting skills. After this encounter, they part ways temporarily, but their paths cross multiple times in the future.
Two years after the Fifth Moon Incident, Wolfwood tracks down Vash, who is leading a peaceful life in the quiet town of Kasted City, which is plagued by bandits. Wolfwood informs Vash about a mysterious incident in Carcases town where the residents vanished, leaving only the name “Knives” painted on a stone.
This news prompts Vash to leave his peaceful life and take up his gun once more to confront his brother.Shortly after, Milly and Meryl join Vash’s journey again, and the group travels together. They visit Vash’s home SEED ship, but their arrival triggers conflict when the Gung-Ho-Guns reemerge. They face attacks from puppets controlled by Leonof the Puppet-Master, Hoppered the Gauntlet, and Gray the Nine Lives. After a challenging battle, they manage to defeat them, with Hoppered meeting his end in a Plant core explosion, and Wolfwood avenging Brad’s murder by killing Gray and Leonof.Wolfwood consoles Vash after Brad’s tragic death, and the group eventually reaches a town barricaded due to more mysterious disappearances.
They encounter a group of orphans living outside the town and offer assistance. However, one of the orphans, Zazie the Beast, is revealed to be a member of the Gung-Ho-Guns. He threatens to shoot Vash and the orphans while Vash, the insurance girls, and the orphans attempt to find a peaceful resolution. Despite their efforts, Wolfwood ultimately shoots Zazie to protect Vash and the others, causing a fallout over their differing ideals regarding killing. In Carcases, Wolfwood parts ways with the group and encounters his teacher, Chapel the Evergreen.
It’s revealed that Wolfwood was hired by Knives to bring Vash to him and is warned of an impending battle. He reflects on his history of violence and starts to embrace alternatives to killing. Wolfwood apologizes to Vash for their fallout, and Vash reciprocates, but their moment is disrupted by a gunshot from the sniper Caine the Longshot. The two hide in a nearby saloon and make plans to confront Chapel and Caine. Wolfwood decides to face his former mentor, and Vash goes after the sniper. After a brief scuffle, Nicholas defeats Chapel and chooses to embrace his comrade’s morals, refusing to kill him.
However, Chapel, under Legato’s control, raises his Punisher. Wolfwood does the same, and gunshots are exchanged, but only from Chapel’s gun, fatally wounding Nicholas. He consoles Vash and informs him of Knives’ location before passing away.
Vash retrieves Wolfwood’s Punisher gun, buries him, and informs the girls of his passing. The next day, Vash mourns privately and later honors Wolfwood by using his Cross Punisher in his final battle against Knives, ultimately securing victory.
Gung-Ho-Guns And Legato
The story’s central focus shifts as Vash crosses paths with Legato Bluesummers, who shatters Vash’s belief in his brother’s demise by revealing his allegiance to Knives. Legato’s sole purpose is to inflict “eternal pain and suffering” on Vash, using a ruthless and superhuman gang called the Gung-Ho-Guns. The Guns are tasked with harming Vash and eliminating those he cares about, which ultimately leads to the deaths of the entire gang, either by Legato’s hand due to their failures or by their own suicides to torment Vash.
Vash’s struggles with Legato reach a critical juncture with the loss of Wolfwood. In the next city, Vash encounters Midvalley the Hornfreak, who fails to defeat him and resorts to using his powerful horn to take his own life. These events deeply scar Vash, but he continues his pursuit of Legato, refusing to kill him even when Legato taunts him with the prospect of experiencing Vash’s “ultimate” suffering through his first conscious kill.
However, the turning point arrives when Legato threatens the lives of Meryl and Milly in the anime and Livio in the manga. Faced with no other option, Vash is compelled to shoot Legato in the head, resulting in his death.
Finale
The girls bring Vash to a small town to recover from his injuries, and he spends the next few weeks tormented by what he sees as his first murder. Vash is reluctant to confront Knives because it would involve taking another life. When the locals of the town learn of Vash’s presence, they take him to the outskirts of town and drag him behind a speeding vehicle.
Meryl steps in to protect Vash from a frustrated gunman, reminding him of Rem’s actions, and it revitalizes his morale. Saying his goodbyes, Vash ventures into the desert armed with Wolfwood’s Cross Punisher to face Knives in a final battle.
Vash finds Knives in a small flourishing oasis in the desert. They exchange polite greetings and engage in a face-off. The battle reaches a standstill as both men point their guns at each other. Knives, knowing that Vash won’t fire, shoots him and prepares his Angel Arm. Vash responds with his own Angel Arm, canceling out Knives’ attack.
However, Knives gains the upper hand once more and takes Vash’s gun, equipping himself with two Angel Arms.Just as Knives is about to fire, Wolfwood’s voice encourages Vash to “use it.” Vash drives his hand into the ground and retrieves Wolfwood’s Cross Punisher, shooting Knives.
This causes Knives to lose control of the Angel Arms as Vash shoots him in the shoulders and calves, subduing him and ending the fight. Vash emerges victorious and, after discarding his iconic red coat and gun, finally comes to terms with Rem’s death. He declares that he will always believe in her but will now turn to his own words for guidance.
He leaves with an unconscious Knives over his shoulder as he returns to the town where Meryl and Milly a
wait.
Abilities
Vash, as a Plant, possesses superhuman physiology with distinct abilities:
1. High Sensory Perception: Vash’s heightened senses allow him to dodge bullets by predicting trajectories and withstand greater injury than humans. He retains his youthful appearance for over a century of living.
2. Generator Power: He can transform his body, enhance combat capabilities, and efficiently produce and utilize energy. Vash can also heal or calm other Plants.
3. Angel Power: Similar to Generator Power, it allows body transformation and energy reproduction for various purposes.
4. Defensive Wings: These wings can block powerful blows and bullets, independently activated with “angel power.” Vash can also create automatic defensive blades with these wings.
5. Blades: The wings turn into ribbon-blades with monomolecular sharpening, capable of easily cutting steel and stone. They function at a distance or trigger automatic defense close-range attacks.
6. Flight (Levitation): Vash’s abilities suggest manipulation of gravity, although traditional flight isn’t mentioned.
7. Sensory: Vash can pinpoint locations, react in advance to attacks, and demonstrate teleportation over vast distances.
8. Barrier: After concentrating energy, Vash creates a protective barrier capable of withstanding at least a missile hit.
9. Creation of Black Hole Bullets: Vash materializes bullets into mini-collapsars that can be used offensively or defensively.
10. Angel Arm: Vash’s ultimate weapon is within his revolver, transforming his arm into a destructive cannon. In the manga, he gains better control over its power, learning to form smaller cannons and defensive feathers. Using the Angel Arm consumes energy, represented by the darkening of his hair color.
Weapons
1.Cybernetic Machine-gun Arm: Vash’s left arm was severed by Knives, who initially blew it off with a revolver. In the manga, Knives cut it off using a blade formed from his own body. Vash received a cybernetic replacement, which conceals an integrated firearm. It began as a powerful semiautomatic pistol and was later upgraded to a fully automatic submachine gun, notable for its strong recoil. Vash usually conceals his cybernetic arm beneath leather belts to give it a natural appearance. These wrappings are torn away when he deploys the arm’s integrated weapons.
2. .45 Long Colt: Vash’s custom-made revolver is a .45 caliber, either silver or nickel-plated, double-action weapon with a top-break reloading mechanism that fires .45 Long Colt ammunition. Notably, it has 7 shots. The engraving on the side identifies it as a “.45 Long Colt AGL Arms Factory” with angelic wings around “AGL.” This revolver differs from standard designs as its barrel aligns with the 6 o’clock chamber. Vash was originally given this silver gun by Knives, and the black counterpart was kept by Knives himself. In the manga, Vash uses this unique gun for its novelty and habit, while its design differs visually from the anime. In Trigun Maximum, the anime revolver appears as a temporary replacement for Vash’s standard gun during repairs.
Personal Opinion ~
I discovered the Trigun series just a month ago, and I absolutely fell in love with it. It’s an incredible show filled with both fun and deep emotions, and it quickly became one of my all-time favorites. While all the characters in the series are fantastic, Vash is in a league of his own.
Vash is a character I can relate to deeply. His personality, nature, and, most importantly, his thoughts align closely with my own. He’s not your typical anime character; he’s unique and exudes a distinct aura that can make anyone adore him.
I would rate him a solid 10 out of 10
