The Masters Tournament Eight marks the culmination of a World Coronation Series ranking season, featuring the top eight competitors known as the Masters Eight. These elite trainers engage in intense battles at Wyndon Stadium in the Galar region to determine the world’s most formidable Pokémon Trainer, also known as the Monarch.
The recent Masters 8 tournament stood out as the biggest storyline in Pokémon, featuring the world’s eight strongest trainers in intense battles.
Despite the brilliance of these showdowns, the Pokemon masters 8 tournament had its fair share of noticeable flaws.
So lets have a look at them~
1.Underplayed Major Characters~
In Masters 8, legendary Pokémon trainers like Lance, Steven, Cynthia, Iris, Diantha, Alain, Ash, and Leon made a comeback for an epic tournament. Despite being people’s all-time favorites and highly respected in the Pokémon world, many of these characters were sidelined.
The focus on Ash’s dream of facing Leon led to rushed and underwhelming battles, diminishing the significance of these legendary trainers. The tournament narrative turned them into side characters, robbing them of their chance to shine.
2. Rushed and Disappointing Battles~
Despite Master 8 being a legendary arc, most of its battles were rushed and incredibly disappointing. For instance, the battles between Leon and Alain, as well as Leon and Diantha, were hastily executed. The Leon vs. Diantha showdown was mostly off-screen, a significant letdown. Even the initial 3-on-3 battles in the first round lasted only one episode.
The clash between Alain and Leon was cut short, spanning just half an episode and feeling heavily rushed. Compared to previous seasons, many battles in this tournament felt like a downgrade. The Diantha vs. Lance battle, influenced heavily by the games, ended up a bit boring. In essence, only a handful of battles in this tournament were genuinely enjoyable to watch.
3. Leon’s Overpowering Presence ~
At the beginning of the journey series, we were introduced to Leon as the unbeatable Pokémon Champion of Galar. In his debut, Leon defeated Lance, claiming the title of World Monarch. Ash’s ultimate goal became battling and defeating Leon. Throughout the series, Leon showcased his skills by defeating formidable trainers like Flint of the Sinnoh Elite 4 and Galar Dragon Gym Leader Raihan. However, Masters 8 portrayed Leon as even more overpowering than before. In his 3-on-3 battle with Alain, he lost only one Pokémon, and his base Charizard easily defeated Alain’s Mega Charizard X. During the semi-final with Diantha, Leon swept her using his Overpowered Rillaboom, disrespecting the Kalos Champion in the process.
Despite Ash winning against Leon, the victory was tainted as Ash was allowed to use all three gimmicks, while Leon only used one, further amplifying Leon’s overpowered image.
4. Nerfed Pokémons ~
In Masters 8, several Pokémon were notably nerfed compared to their appearances in previous seasons. Champion aces like Diantha’s Gardevoir, Steven’s Metagross, Alain’s Charizard X, and Cynthia’s Garchomp all experienced significant downgrades. For instance, Alain’s Charizard X was swiftly defeated by Leon’s base Charizard, Cynthia’s Garchomp lacked any ground-type moves, Diantha’s Gardevoir didn’t exhibit the speed seen in the Kalos series, and Steven’s Metagross failed to take down a single Pokémon.
These legendary-level Pokémon faced moments of severe weakening, failing to showcase the same power as witnessed in their previous appearances.
5. Predictable outcomes ~
Despite having immense potential, the Masters 8 arc fell a bit short of expectations due to predictable battle outcomes. The series emphasized Ash’s main goal of battling and defeating Leon, making it evident from the start that they would face off in the final.
This predictability extended to the bracket, except for Lance vs. Diantha and Leon vs. Ash. As a result, the lack of surprises in the overall outcomes diminished the excitement factor of the tournament.
6. Illogical Moments ~
In Masters 8, several battles featured illogical occurrences, such as Rillaboom surviving a super-effective Fire Blast from Diantha’s Goodra. Mega Gardevoir, facing a combination of Psychic, G-Max Wildfire, and Max Airstream, was surprisingly overpowered by a single G-Max Wildfire. Lucario displayed improbable resilience against numerous Air Slashes from Cynthia’s Togekiss.
Furthermore, Cynthia’s Gastrodon defeat resulted from rocks and a Quick Attack, while Diantha’s Tyrantrum used Hyper Beam against Leon’s Dragapult, which is immune to Normal-type moves. Additionally, Steven’s Mega Metagross dodging a Z-Move added to the list of illogical moments in the Masters 8 battles.
7. Excessive Unnecessary Fillers ~
The highly anticipated Masters 8 arc was marred by numerous unnecessary filler episodes, notably the Chloe fillers. While these episodes weren’t inherently irrelevant, their timing was questionable.
Rather than exploring meaningful content like trainers practicing and strategizing for upcoming battles, we were presented with fillers like Chloe’s, which didn’t contribute significantly to the overarching narrative. The Chloe fillers failed to advance her story and left it incomplete.
8. Absent Old Pokémon: Ash’s Choice ~
The Masters 8 posed Ash’s most significant challenge, marking a pivotal step in his journey to become a world champion. Having captured a diverse array of Pokémon throughout his adventures, utilizing different ones in his ultimate battle could have added intensity and nostalgia to the clashes.
Incorporating his past companions, like Infernape against Cynthia’s Garchomp or deploying Hoenn Pokémon like Sceptile against Steven, would have elevated the battles. While Ash’s world champion team deserved appreciation, a mix of old and new Pokémon in key battles could have provided a refreshing and thrilling dynamic.
9. Many Missed Opportunities ~
The Masters 8 arc, undoubtedly filled with great moments, left us yearning for more due to missed opportunities. One significant lapse was Ash’s failure to utilize a mix of new and old Pokémon. Additionally, the tournament format, instead of a knockout, could have been a round-robin.
While acknowledging the time constraints, a round-robin format would have allowed each trainer to face every other, providing a more comprehensive method to determine the strongest. This format could have paved the way for exciting battles like Cynthia vs. Leon, Lance vs. Iris, Alain vs. Ash, and Diantha vs. Cynthia, enhancing the overall experience.
Personal Opinion ~
While Masters 8 had its moments, sidelining major characters and focusing excessively on Ash vs. Leon, nerfing Pokémon, and overpowering Leon were drawbacks.
However, the arc remained enjoyable, witnessing the top eight trainers together was fantastic, and Ash achieving his dream was truly satisfying.
