Milo, the energetic farmer and the first Gym Leader of the Galar region, is a breath of fresh air in the competitive world of Pokémon battling. Hailing from the sun-drenched fields of Turffield, this young man embodies the gentle spirit of his agricultural community.
● Games (Sword and Shield) ~
• In Game ~
Milo, the first Gym Leader in the Galarian Pokemon Challenge, much like other Gym Leaders, she is initially introduced during the Gym Challenge’s opening ceremony at Motostoke Stadium.
He isn’t your typical tough-as-nails trainer. Hailing from the sun-drenched fields of Turffield, this gentle giant is a farmer at heart, having honed his skills alongside his Pokemon companions. You’ll often find him wrangling wayward Wooloo with his trusty Yamper herding dog, a testament to his deep connection with nature.
Despite his impressive size and strength, Milo’s a laid-back, friendly soul. He prioritizes fun over fierce competition, sometimes struggling to go full force against weaker opponents. Win or lose, as long as everyone’s having a good time, he’s happy.
Beyond the Gym, Milo proves his worth as a team player. In their pursuit of Sordward and Shielbert, the brothers utilize their supply of Wishing Stars to compel a Tsareena from the Stadium into an involuntary Dynamax, leading it to go on a rampage . Milo joins forces with the player, Hop, and Piers in a thrilling Max Raid Battle against a Dynamax Tsareena, showcasing his strategic approach to tough challenges.
He also participates in the Galarian Star Tournament, demonstrating his dedication to Pokemon battling on a larger stage.
• Gym Structure ~
Turffield Stadium, the largest building in town, hosts the inaugural Gym Challenge in the Galar region. Positioned at the northernmost part of Turffield, the stadium features a Poké Mart and a uniform shop.
In the Gym mission, players must herd 20 Wooloo across four sections, overcoming Yamper obstacles in all but the first section. Defeating a Gym Trainer makes the corresponding Yamper idle for the rest of the mission. Withdrawal or defeat resets the mission, but completed missions allow players to proceed directly to the Gym battle.
During the Gym mission and hallway before the Gym battle, players cannot use Pokémon Camp, Pokémon Box Link, or VS.
• After Win ~
Following the player’s victory over Milo, they receive the Grass Badge, TM10 (Magical Leaf), and the Grass Uniform as rewards.
● Anime ~
Though Milo didn’t appear in the mainline anime series, he makes an appearance in the Pokémon Special series,
Pokémon: Twilight Wings.
Milo cameoed in the episode “Letter.”
In “Buddy,” Milo briefly appeared when Hop’s Wooloo ended up on his farm. He noticed it among his herd of Wooloo, checked its tag, and arranged for a Flying Taxi to return Hop’s Wooloo home.
In “Early-Evening Waves,” a television broadcast showed Milo defeating Nessa during the Champions Cup.
In “Sky,” Milo shared his thoughts about Champion Leon in an interview.
In “The Gathering of Stars,” Milo was seen tending to hay in the field with his Wooloo. Later, at Wyndon Stadium, he walked onto the field for the opening ceremony of the Galarian Star Tournament.
● Pokemons ~
• Character and Personality ~
Farm Fresh Trainer: Hailing from Turffield’s rolling fields, Milo grew up strong and skilled working with his Pokemon.
Big Heart, Big Boots: Milo’s kind nature makes him struggle against weak opponents. No wonder his Gym’s the first, giving newbies a gentle start.
Easy Does It: Don’t let his laid-back attitude fool you. Milo’s surprisingly strong – those Gym hay bales weigh over 770 pounds, and he rolls them like toys!
Wooloo Wranglin’: Keep your eyes peeled! Milo may be seen sprinting through town chasing after runaway Wooloo, his trusty Yamper at his heels. It’s a Turffield tradition!
Fun First, Victory Second: Winning’s cool, but for Milo, having a good time with his Pokemon is what matters most.
One-Sided Rivalry: Nessa sees Milo as her rival, but he’s clueless! His only competition is himself, always striving to be better.
In short, Milo’s a friendly giant who loves Pokemon, fun, and farm life. He may not be the fiercest fighter, but his big heart and easygoing spirit make him a beloved figure in Galar.
☆ Nessa ~

Hometown | Hulbury |
Region | Galar |

Model |

Specializes in | Water-types |
Meet Nessa, the poised Water-type Gym Leader of Hulbury, who captivates Galarian Trainers not only with her aquatic expertise but also as a successful model.
● Games (Sword and Shield) ~
• In Game ~
Nessa serves as the second Gym Leader for Galarian Trainers embarking on their Gym Challenge. Much like other Gym Leaders, she is initially introduced during the Gym Challenge’s opening ceremony at Motostoke Stadium.
Upon the player’s arrival in Hulbury, Nessa is not found at her Gym. Instead, she can be located near the town’s lighthouse, and the player must engage in conversation there to prompt her return to the Gym, where a battle awaits.
After the player defeats Kabu, Nessa, along with Milo, joins in to extend good luck wishes for the remainder of the Gym Challenge.
While pursuing Sordward and Shielbert, the brothers use their stock of Wishing Stars to compel a Gyarados from the Stadium into a forced Dynamax, leading it to rampage in the Stadium. Nessa collaborates with the player, Hop, and Piers to confront the Dynamax Gyarados in a Max Raid Battle.
Additionally, Nessa becomes an opponent in the first round of the Champion Cup Finals and also competes in the Galarian Star Tournament.
• Gym Structure ~
Hulbury Stadium, situated at the northernmost part of town, serves as the venue for the second installment of the Galar region’s Gym Challenge. Like other stadiums in the region, it features a Poké Mart and a uniform shop. The Gym mission involves navigating a maze obstructed by falling streams of water.
Throughout the Gym, colored pipes and grills present challenges with three different colors: red, yellow, and blue. Activated pipes release water, blocking the player’s path, while deactivated ones allow passage. Colored switches exist to manipulate the maze; pressing a switch activates all inactive pipes of the same color but deactivates active ones.
Players can withdraw from the Gym mission at any time, returning to the entrance. Losing or withdrawing resets the mission, though defeated Gym Trainers cannot be rematched. Completion of the mission allows players to proceed directly to the Gym battle.
During the mission and in the hallway before the Gym battle, the player cannot use Pokémon Camp, Pokémon Box Link, or VS.
• After Win ~
Following the player’s victory over Nessa, they receive the Water Badge, TM36 (Whirlpool), and the Water Uniform as rewards.
● Pokemons ~

Though Nessa didn’t appear in the mainline anime series, she makes an appearance in the Pokémon Special series,
Pokémon: Twilight Wings

A more prominent role for Nessa unfolded in “Early-Evening Waves,” where she experienced defeat in the Champion Cup at the hands of Milo. Post-match, Rose approached her, suggesting the loss was due to distractions from her modeling career, leaving her agitated. Seeking solace, she shared her frustrations with Sonia. During a subsequent photo shoot, Nessa encountered a Feebas from her childhood, now evolved into a Milotic. Despite Rose’s insinuations, she decided to persist as both a Gym Leader and a model.
In “Sky,” Nessa expressed her thoughts about Leon during an interview.
In “The Gathering of Stars,” Nessa was spotted taking a break at a modeling photoshoot studio when she received an invitation letter for the Galarian Star Tournament. Subsequently, she made an appearance at Wyndon Stadium, walking onto the field for the opening ceremony of the tournament.
● Character and Personality ~

Two Sides of a Coin: Nessa’s calm and collected in public, but her competitive spirit burns bright behind the scenes. She juggles Gym Leader duties and modeling with fierce determination.
Finding her Balance: After a tough loss, Nessa faced pressure to choose between Gym and catwalk. But she embraced both sides, proving she’s strong enough to rock the waves and the runway.
Nessa’s a captivating mix of ocean power, model grace, and hidden depths. This Gym Leader is sure to make a splash!
☆ Kabu ~
Name | Kabu |
Gender | Male |
Hometown | Motostoke (original hometown unknown) |
Region | Galar (originally Hoenn) |

Meet Kabu, Motostoke’s fiery Gym Leader! This Hoenn veteran’s seen it all, his passion scorching battles and hearts alike. Don’t fear his gruff exterior – he thrives on sharing wisdom and pushing trainers to blaze their own path!
• Games (Sword and Shield) ~
• In Game ~
Kabu stands as the third Gym Leader that Galar Trainers encounter in their Gym Challenge, representing a formidable hurdle. Renowned as the first significant challenge in the Gym Challenge, many Trainers often face difficulties and some even give up when trying to defeat him.
Originally a Trainer from Hoenn, Kabu was invited to join the Galar League and currently leads the Motostoke Gym. Despite losing his Gym position temporarily, he made a triumphant return several years later. Kabu’s journey includes multiple attempts to become Champion, each ending in dissatisfaction. Experimenting with a no-holds-barred approach and even dropping to the minor division of the Galar League, he struggled until a pivotal encounter with Leon renewed his faith in his potential.
This experience led Kabu to adopt an unwaveringly positive outlook on life, approaching battles with every intention to win alongside his formidable Fire-type Pokémon.
In their pursuit of Sordward and Shielbert, the brothers utilize their supply of Wishing Stars to compel a Torkoal from the Stadium into an involuntary Dynamax, leading it to go on a rampage. The player, alongside Hop, Piers, and Kabu, engages in a Max Raid Battle to subdue and pacify the rampaging Torkoal.
He can be battled in both the Champion Tournament and the Galarian Star Tournament.
• Gym Structure ~
Motostoke Stadium, located in the northeastern part of the city at the upper tier, serves as the venue for the third installment of Galar’s Gym Challenge. The Gym mission requires the player to earn five points by defeating or catching wild Pokémon in tall grass, with catching yielding two points and defeating yielding one.
Within the Gym’s three tall grass areas, visible Pokémon act as stationary wanderers. Gym Trainers accompany these Pokémon, engaging in 2-on-1 competitive wild encounters with the player. The player can run from these encounters, but the option to run is not presented if their Pokémon faints.
A scoreboard keeps track of the player’s score in the middle of the area. Notably, if the Gym Trainer’s Pokémon causes the wild Pokémon to faint, the player earns no points or experience. Pokémon Camp, Pokémon Box Link, and VS are disabled during the Gym mission and in the hallway before the Gym battle.
• After Win ~
Following the player’s victory over Kabu, they receive the Fire Badge, TM38 (Will-O-Wisp), and the Fire Uniform as rewards.
● Pokemons ~
● Anime ~

Kabu debuted in HZ019, eating at Motostoke Battle Café. Later, he trained Liko and Roy to manipulate Litwick flames. After a Tag Battle, Kabu advised Liko on balancing kindness and competitiveness.
In HZ023, he investigated Galar Mine’s collapse and encountered Liko, Roy, and a rescued Galarian Moltres.
Pokemon Twilight Series:
In “Assistant,” Kabu jogged at Wyndon Stadium.
In “Sky,” he shared thoughts about Leon during an interview while working out.
In “The Gathering of Stars,” he jogged with Centiskorch in Motostoke and later appeared at Wyndon Stadium’s opening ceremony for the Galarian Star Tournament.
• Character and Personality ~
Hoenn’s Hot Shot: Invited to Galar, Kabu once burned his way close to Champion, but victory slipped through his fingers. This near-miss fueled his fiery passion and determination.
No Shortcut to Victory: Kabu tried it all – brute force, strategy shifts, even the minor leagues – but the Champion’s crown remained elusive. He learned that passion needs guidance, not just heat.
Rekindled Flame: A battle with Leon rekindled Kabu’s spirit. He rediscovered the joy of the fight, the thrill of pushing his Fire-type team to their limits, and the joy of learning each day.
Simple & Scorching: Don’t expect fancy tricks from Kabu. He plays his cards straight, like a roaring flame: direct, intense, and always full of surprises.
Experimentation Master: Don’t just copy him, though! Kabu encourages exploring your Poké Pals’ potential. Try new moves, items, and strategies – there’s always a new path to victory hidden in the ashes!
Kabu’s a living lesson in perseverance and growth. He’s proof that even the hottest flames can flicker, but with patience, passion, and a little experimenting, they can blaze brighter than ever!

● Games (Sword and Shield) ~
• In Game ~
Opal serves as the fifth Gym Leader that Galarian Trainers encounter during their Gym Challenge.
Past ~
Opal assumed the role of Ballonlea Gym Leader at 18, succeeding her mother, and has maintained it for 70 years. Half a century before the events of Pokémon Sword and Shield, she competed against Mustard for the Galar League Champion title but was defeated, despite her Fairy-type Pokémon holding a type advantage. Opal, nicknamed the “wizard,” is renowned for her purported ability to predict opponents’ moves in battle. Due to her advanced age in Sword and Shield, her Gym mission serves as an audition to find her successor.
Present ~
Opal makes her debut at Motostoke Stadium during the Gym Challenge’s opening ceremony. Later, she is spotted on Route 6, observing the player and Hop in a battle against Team Yell Grunts. Her presence is noted in Stow-on-Side as she watches the player’s battle with Hop. Following her defeat in a Gym battle at Ballonlea, Opal offers to accompany the player to Hammerlocke to expedite their journey to the next Gym. In Hammerlocke, she recognizes Bede’s potential and deems him a worthy successor, bringing him to Ballonlea.
By the Champion Cup in Wyndon, Opal officially passes her role as a Fairy-type Gym Leader to Bede. Despite her retirement, Opal occasionally visits the Gym to offer advice to Bede. While she doesn’t partake in post-game Champion tournaments, Opal actively participates in the Galarian Star Tournament.
• Gym Structure ~
Ballonlea Stadium, situated at the northernmost part of the town and spanning across a wooden bridge over a small lake, serves as the venue for the fifth installment of the Galar region’s Gym Challenge. The stadium’s primarily gray exterior with purple accents signifies its association with the Fairy type. Similar to other stadiums in the region, Ballonlea Stadium features a Poké Mart and a uniform shop.
The Gym mission revolves around Gym Leader Opal’s quest to find a successor, prompting challengers to undergo an examination. The mission consists of three Trainer battles, and after the first turn of each battle, players are posed a question with two possible answers. A correct answer results in a boost to the player’s Pokémon’s stats, while an incorrect answer leads to a stat reduction. This pattern continues during the Gym battle, where Opal presents questions at the end of specific turns, with the correct answers bolded for guidance.
• After Win ~
Following Opal’s initial defeat, players receive the Fairy Badge, TM87 (Draining Kiss), and the Fairy Uniform.
● Anime ~
• Pokemon Anime ~
• Opal made her first appearance in “The Tale of You and Glimwood Tangle!” where she encountered Ash and Goh in Ballonlea, challenging them to quizzes.
• During the quizzes, Opal made them and their Pokémon wear pink clothes for each incorrect answer, aiming to keep them from recklessly searching for Chloe.
• In “The Sweet Taste of Battle!”, Opal hosted a cake-decorating contest, the All-Alcremie Decoration Challenge, at Ballonlea Stadium.
• Inviting participants like Ash, Goh, Chloe, Raihan, and Leon, she loaned each contestant one of her Alcremie for the contest.
• After decorating the cakes, Opal tasted each one to determine the winner, choosing Ash’s cake as the victor.
• Unexpectedly, she challenged Ash to a battle during which she Gigantamaxed her Alcremie and used G-Max Finale on Ash’s Pikachu.
• Pikachu grew giant and fat from consuming the cream, ending the battle prematurely.
• Opal joined the contestants in enjoying the cakes they had decorated after the event.
• Pokemon Twilight Wings:
• Opal featured in “Sky” of Pokémon Twilight Wings, sharing her thoughts about Leon in an interview.
